Social farming: the preserves made together with La Conserveria

"Social farming" is a phrase that sounds bureaucratic and describes something simple: using agricultural work as a tool for inclusion, giving people who struggle to find a place in the labour market a real trade, with real timetables and real responsibilities.

In Tuscany it is a recognised practice, supported by the Region through dedicated funding calls. The project we have carried out together with La Conserveria won one of those calls, and it was presented at the Campagna Amica farmers' market in Arezzo.

What changes, in practice

Turning fruit into preserve is work made of repeated, precise steps: sorting, washing, cutting, weighing, cooking, jarring, labelling. Each step has a clear rule and a result you can see straight away.

That is exactly the kind of work that functions well in a setting built around inclusion: the tasks are understandable, the finished product is concrete, and at the end of the day there is a row of jars that was not there before.

This is not charity

This is the point we want to state plainly. The jars that come out of this work sit on the shelf next to the others, at the same price, and they are bought because they are good. There is no moral discount and no label asking for understanding.

A social farming project that turned out mediocre goods would fail twice over: as a business and as a social project. Quality is not an extra here, it is the condition on which the whole thing makes sense.

Why fruit lends itself

There is an agronomic reason too. A farm's fruit is never all first choice: some is perfect for the market stall, some is ripe exactly right to be processed immediately. That second part, without a workshop to handle it, becomes waste.

Putting an agricultural necessity together with a project of inclusion is not a sophisticated idea. It is the reason the two pieces fit so well.

What came of it

The preserves and jellies in our range: Green Tomato Preserve, Plum Preserve, Melon Jelly.

You can taste them knowing none of this, and that is as it should be. But if somebody asks how they are made, the answer includes the hands that made them.
